My Business Is Not Appearing in AI Search
My Business Is Not Appearing in AI Search
Not seeing your business in an AI search answer can be frustrating, but one result does not tell the whole story. Start by recording the exact question, the system used, the date and what appeared before deciding what the website needs.

Step 1Define
Define the visibility question

A search for your business name and a request for recommended providers are different observations. A broad informational question is different again. Keep them separate so the review has a clear purpose.
Also distinguish an answer mentioning a brand from a citation linking to a website. They are not the same kind of visibility.
Step 2Website
Review what the website makes clear

- Business identity
- Useful question
- Can a visitor understand who provides the service?
- Service information
- Useful question
- Are important questions answered clearly and accurately?
- Public pages
- Useful question
- Are the relevant pages available to search?
- Evidence
- Useful question
- Are claims supported rather than repeated without proof?
- Navigation
- Useful question
- Can the important information be reached from related pages?
These are useful website foundations. They are not a formula that guarantees inclusion in an AI answer.
Step 3Platforms
Keep platform guidance specific

Google's guidance for its AI search features points back to established search requirements and useful content rather than a special AI-only optimisation file. Guidance for one system should not be treated as a complete description of every AI product.
We use the relevant current platform guidance when assessing a specific visibility question. A snapshot or test set remains an observation with limits, not a universal ranking score.
Step 4Next Step
Choose a sensible next step

If important pages have ordinary search or content problems, address those foundations. If the website already explains the business well, the investigation may need a more specific set of queries and observations before recommending changes.
AI Search Optimization covers the service work. This guide helps you prepare the question and avoid buying an undefined promise of "AI rankings".
Step 5Log
Keep an observation log

Start with one question a potential customer would genuinely ask. Repeat the same test before deciding that a single appearance or absence represents a pattern.
- Date and context
- What to save
- Date, country, language, device and any location settings
- Platform and mode
- What to save
- Google AI Overview or AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, or Copilot; model or mode when visible
- Exact question
- What to save
- The wording used, including any follow-up question
- Outcome
- What to save
- Linked citation, mention without a link, absent, or answer feature did not appear
- Supporting record
- What to save
- Screenshot or saved answer and the cited page URLs
- Next check
- What to save
- A specific access, content or factual question to investigate
A Google result without an AI Overview is different from an AI Overview that leaves your business out. A brand mention without a website link is also different from a referral visit. Keep those outcomes separate.
For ChatGPT and Perplexity, first note whether the answer used web search. A response from stored model knowledge does not test the same thing as an answer retrieving current websites. If you cannot establish the mode, record it as unknown.
Step 6Refine
Turn the observation into a useful question

If the cited page answers something your site leaves unclear, review that gap before adding another page. If the relevant page cannot be accessed, start with an SEO Audit. If you need a scoped assessment across platforms, see AI Search Optimization.
Do not copy a competitor's claims just because an answer cites them. Check what your business can support and what a customer actually needs to decide.
Questions about AI search visibility
Can you guarantee a mention?
No. We cannot control what an external system includes in a particular answer.
Do we need hundreds of new AI-focused pages?
Not on that assumption. New content needs a useful purpose and accurate information, just as any other page does.
Is normal SEO irrelevant now?
No. Search accessibility, clear information and useful content remain relevant foundations; the requirements of the specific system still need checking.

Bring one concrete example
Share the question and result you observed, along with the page you expected to be relevant. We can then discuss what evidence is needed to assess it.
