Website Analytics and Conversion Tracking

Website analytics and conversion tracking show what visitors do on your website and whether they complete the actions that matter, such as sending an enquiry, booking or buying. Webzstore sets up, troubleshoots and reports on Google Analytics and Google Ads tracking for the actions you agree.

01Actions

Know which website actions matter

Start with the business action, not the tool. A page view is not an enquiry. We agree which actions matter and what question each report should answer before anything is set up.

02Choose

Choose what you want to measure

Select one part, several parts or the whole measurement setup. The plan you see is a starting point for the call, not a quote.

Where this startsWe cannot tell which actions on our website matter, or whether our enquiries, bookings and ad conversions are being counted correctly.

  • Review of existing analytics, tags and account access
  • Agreed events, key events and advertising conversion actions
  • Test steps that check each action fires once per completion
  • A plain-language event and access record

Check first: Which of your actions are already tracked and who can change the setup.

Next: Bring your website address and details of your Google Analytics and Google Ads accounts.

    • Agree the questions you want your reports to answer
    • Review the existing analytics property, tags and account access
    • Choose which website actions are worth measuring
    • Note what the data cannot show

Check first: Whether analytics is installed and who has access to the account.

Next: Send your website address and tell us who can log in to your Google Analytics account. Discuss the selected work and agree the scope before implementation.

    • Define each action, such as a form submission, booking or purchase
    • Set up and test the agreed events and key events in Google Analytics
    • Check each test action is recorded once per completion, not twice
    • Record the event names in plain language

Check first: Which actions should count and where each one is confirmed on the website.

Next: List the enquiry, booking or purchase actions you want counted. Discuss the selected work and agree the scope before implementation.

    • Link the Google Analytics and Google Ads accounts where appropriate
    • Choose which actions become Google Ads conversion actions
    • Avoid duplicate firing and two primary Google Ads conversion actions for the same outcome
    • Document what each report does and does not show

Check first: Which Google Ads account is in use and whether it is already linked to Google Analytics.

In plain terms

Event
Something a visitor does on the website that Google Analytics records, such as sending a form.
Key event
An event you mark in Google Analytics as important to your business.
Google Ads conversion
An action Google Ads uses to measure campaigns. It can be created from a key event.

03Plan

Build a useful measurement plan

Write one row for each action before setting anything up. A business action, an analytics event, an advertising conversion and a CRM record are four different things.

  • Business action

    Enquiry form sent

    1. Google Analytics event

An event on the confirmation step, marked as a key event if it matters to the business

    2. Google Ads conversion

A conversion action, only if ads send people to the form

    3. CRM status

Whether the enquiry reaches your CRM or inbox

  • Business action

    Booking made

    1. Google Analytics event

An event on the booking confirmation, marked as a key event

    2. Google Ads conversion

A conversion with a counting option that suits the action

    3. CRM status

Whether the booking is passed on to your CRM

  • Business action

    Purchase

    1. Google Analytics event

A purchase event with an order reference

    2. Google Ads conversion

A conversion with an order ID so repeats are not counted twice

    3. CRM status

Usually none, unless customers are also kept in a CRM

A key event is a Google Analytics event you mark as important to your business. A Google Ads conversion is an action used to measure ad campaigns, and it can be imported from a key event. The same action can legitimately be recorded in Google Analytics, Google Ads and your CRM. What we avoid is one tag firing twice, or two primary Google Ads conversion actions measuring the same outcome, such as a Google Ads tag plus an imported key event. Google Ads sets imported Analytics key events as secondary conversion actions by default so they are not counted twice for bidding, and totals from different systems should not be added together as separate customers.

04Test

Set up and test the agreed events

Every event is tested before we call it finished.

  1. Review the existing analytics property, tags and who has access.
  2. Set up the agreed events and mark the right ones as key events.
  3. Complete a test enquiry, booking or order and watch it arrive in DebugView or the Realtime report.
  4. Check each action is recorded once per completion in each system, on a phone and on a desktop screen.
  5. Connect the matching Google Ads conversion action where appropriate.
  6. Record what was set up and what was checked.

A key event applies from the time it is created and does not change past data. Standard reports can take up to 24 hours to show it.

05Reports

Make the reports easier to use

We hand over a plain-language record of each event: what triggers it, whether it is a key event or an ad conversion, and who has access to each account. If something stops counting later, that record shows where to look.

  1. Reports will not count every visitor. Consent choices, ad blockers, browser settings and steps that happen offline, such as a phone call after a visit, all limit the data. A report shows what was recorded, not proof of what caused it.
  2. Setting up a cookie or consent banner is separate work that depends on your own policy and legal requirements. We do not certify legal compliance.

Common questions

Which website actions should we measure?

The ones your business depends on, such as enquiries, bookings, purchases, calls or sign-ups. Begin with a few actions you will use to make decisions rather than tracking every click.

What is the difference between a GA4 key event and an ad conversion?

A key event is an event you mark as important in Google Analytics 4. An ad conversion is an action Google Ads uses to measure and optimise campaigns, and it can be created from a key event. The same action can appear in both. We set them up so that one tag does not fire twice and two primary conversion actions do not measure the same outcome, and we do not add the two reports together as separate customers.

Can you fix duplicate or missing events?

We can review the setup, find where an event fires twice or not at all and correct the agreed events. What can be fixed depends on access to the website, the tags and the accounts.

Will analytics measure every visitor?

No. Consent choices, ad blockers, browser settings and offline steps mean some visits and actions are never recorded, so treat reports as a guide rather than a full count.
