WordPress to Squarespace Migration

We move WordPress websites to Squarespace by fitting your content into Squarespace's page and blog structure, recreating the layouts and finding an answer for each plugin task. Squarespace cannot do everything a plugin can, so we check each one before you decide.

Webzstore assesses your current content and tools first. The plan then separates what can be imported from what must be built again.

01Choose

Choose what you want to change

Select one area, a few, or the whole project. What you select shapes the plan we discuss together.

Where this startsWe want a simpler, all-in-one site on Squarespace, but our WordPress site relies on plugins and custom content types.

Choose one part, several parts or the whole project
  • Review of content types and plugins
  • Structure matching and content import
  • Layout rebuild in Squarespace
  • Decisions for tasks plugins used to do
  • Redirects, domain steps and launch checks

Check first: Which plugin tasks Squarespace cannot cover.

Next: Share your WordPress address and a list of your plugins.

    • List post types, categories and tags
    • Match each type to a Squarespace page or blog
    • Decide what to do with content that has no equivalent
    • Check the import route Squarespace accepts

Check first: Whether any custom content types hold important records.

Next: Send a list of your post types and roughly how many items each holds.

    • Choose the pages that need exact layouts
    • Rebuild headers, footers and navigation
    • Re-place images and downloads
    • Test on phone and desktop

Check first: Which layouts are essential and which can be simplified.

Next: Share links to five representative pages.

    • List every plugin and its visitor-facing job
    • Compare each task with Squarespace features
    • Choose replace, drop or keep elsewhere
    • Plan forms and gated pages separately

Check first: Which plugin tasks the business cannot lose.

Next: Send a screenshot of your plugin list from the WordPress admin.

    • Download the media library from WordPress
    • Re-upload images to Squarespace
    • Build and test a redirect map
    • Agree the order of the domain steps

Check first: Whether the WordPress site can stay public until launch.

In plain terms

Plugin
An add-on that gives WordPress an extra feature, such as a form or booking tool.
Custom content type
A kind of WordPress record you define yourself, such as events or team members.
Redirect map
A list that sends visitors from each old address to its new one.

02Decide

Which plugin tasks might Squarespace not cover?

List every plugin and what it does for visitors or editors. Then ask the question in the right-hand column. If the answer is no, you decide whether to replace the task, drop it or keep it elsewhere.

  • Plugin task

    Forms with conditional fields

    Question to answer

Does a Squarespace form do the same and reach the same inbox?

  • Plugin task

Custom post types, such as events or team members

    Question to answer

Which Squarespace page type or blog holds each one?

  • Plugin task

    Membership or gated pages

    Question to answer

Is the task supported, or does it need a different tool?

  • Plugin task

    Shop or booking add-ons

    Question to answer

Which part moves through the ecommerce route, and which is rebuilt?

  • Plugin task

    Sidebars and widgets

    Question to answer

Where does each item sit in the new layout?

A custom post type is a record type you define yourself, such as events or team members.

03Transfer

Check the import against the new structure

The WordPress export file holds posts, pages, categories, tags, comments, custom fields and menus (when all content is chosen). It leaves out your theme, plugins and settings, and holds links to the media files rather than the files.

  1. List your post types, categories and tags.
  2. Match each type to a Squarespace page or blog.
  3. Decide what happens to anything with no direct equivalent.
  4. Confirm which import route Squarespace accepts at the time.
  5. Download the media library, and keep the WordPress site public until you do.

04Test

Recreate the layouts and test the editing

Layouts are built again in Squarespace, section by section, using your current pages as the reference.

  • We test a long post, a landing page and a form on a phone and a desktop.
  • Your editor then changes a headline, replaces an image and publishes a post, so you know the daily routine works.
  • Our WordPress Website Design page covers the alternative of staying on WordPress.

05Launch

Agree the launch and the old addresses

We agree the order in which the domain and the site change, because they are managed separately.

  • We prepare a redirect map (a checked list that forwards each old address to the right new page), because blog and page addresses can differ in Squarespace.
  • We test it before the switch.
  • Search results can shift after launch, so we keep an eye on them without promising an outcome.
  • The overall approach to moving between platforms is on our Website Migration Services page.

Questions about moving WordPress to Squarespace

Will my plugins keep working on Squarespace?

No. Plugins belong to WordPress. Each task needs a Squarespace feature, a separate tool or a decision to drop it.

Can all my posts and pages be imported?

It depends on how your content is structured. Standard posts and pages are easiest, while custom content types need matching to a page or blog first.

Will my theme be moved?

No. A WordPress theme is not part of the export file, so the layouts are recreated.
