The CSS 'background-image' property sets one or more background images for an element. These images are placed on top of any background color and can be positioned, sized, and repeated according to other background properties. The property is crucial for adding visual depth, texture, or branding elements (like logos) to web pages without using additional HTML elements.

background-image: url('image-url')|none|initial|inherit;

Usage of the 'background-image' Property

'background-image' is used when you want to apply images as the background of an element. It's versatile for creating designs that require imagery, such as banners, hero sections, buttons with icons, or any element that benefits from a decorative or informative background. This property can take multiple images, allowing for layered background effects.

Property Values of the 'background-image' Property

  • URL ('image-url'): Specifies the path to the image file you want to use as the background. To layer images, you can include multiple URLs separated by commas.
  • None: No background image will be displayed. This is the default value.
  • Initial: Resets the property to its default value (none), removing any background images.
  • Inherit: This method inherits the 'background-image' property from the element's parent. It helps have child elements share the same background image as their parent without redefining the URL.
