Website Speed Optimization

Website speed optimization starts with finding what is slowing your important pages down. We investigate loading and interaction behaviour, then compare changes under recorded test conditions.

01Pages

Test more than the homepage

A service page, product page and checkout can behave differently. We choose the templates and journeys relevant to your business rather than assume one score describes the entire site.

The device, connection and test conditions matter too. A comparison is more useful when it records how the result was obtained and what changed between tests.

02Delays

Investigate the source of the delay

  • Images and page assets

Review the media being loaded and the way it is delivered. The right change should preserve useful content while reducing avoidable work for the page.

  • Scripts and third-party tools

Consider what each script contributes to the customer journey. Removing or changing a tool needs to account for the function it supplies, including forms and measurement.

  • Hosting and caching

Assess the delivery setup and its dependencies. A hosting change is not the automatic answer to every slow page, and caching changes need to preserve current information and customer-specific behaviour.

  • Mobile interactions

Check how the page responds when someone opens the menu, uses a form or tries to complete the next step. Loading speed and the usability of an interaction need attention together.

03Compare

Keep the comparison meaningful

  • Record

    Page or template

Why it belongs in the investigation

    Shows where the observation applies

  • Record

    Device and connection conditions

Why it belongs in the investigation

    Makes repeat testing interpretable

  • Record

    Observed issue

Why it belongs in the investigation

Separates the symptom from an assumed cause

  • Record

    Proposed change

Why it belongs in the investigation

    Explains what is being tested

  • Record

    Repeat result

Why it belongs in the investigation

Shows what changed under comparable conditions

  • Record

    Functional check

Why it belongs in the investigation

Confirms the customer action still works

This is an investigation format, not a set of invented performance scores.

04Measures

Understand the measures

Core Web Vitals address loading, responsiveness and visual stability. Lab tests help investigate a page under controlled conditions; field information reflects real-user experience where sufficient data is available. The two answer related but different questions. Web Vitals guidance.

We use the relevant evidence to prioritise work. A score improvement alone is not proof of a change in rankings or sales, and we do not promise a perfect score on every test.

Questions about website speed

Why is one page slower than another?

Different templates, content and dependencies can create different work for the browser and server. We assess the affected pages rather than generalise from one result.

Will you remove useful features?

We first establish what each feature does. Performance changes need to be tested against the functionality the business wants to retain.

How do we know a fix helped?

Compare the same relevant pages under recorded conditions, then review available field information separately. Keep the change history so later results have context.
