Squarespace to Shopify Migration
Squarespace to Shopify Migration
We move Squarespace shops to Shopify by treating the product catalogue, the customer and order records and the rest of the website as three separate jobs, with two areas that cut across all three. Each job has its own export, its own gaps and its own rebuild, and mixing them is where stores lose images, reviews or customer detail.
Shopify's Store Migration app does not include Squarespace in its list of sources, so we plan around CSV files (spreadsheet-style files) and tested imports.

01Choose
Choose what you want to change
Pick one part of the shop, several parts, or the whole project. What you see is a plan to talk through on the call, not a quote.
Where this startsMy shop sits inside a Squarespace site and I want Shopify, but I am not sure how to separate the products from everything else.
In plain terms
- CSV file
- A simple spreadsheet-style file that holds rows of data.
- Variant
- One version of a product, such as a particular size and colour.
- Collection
- A Shopify group of products that shoppers can browse.
- Redirect file
- A list that sends visitors from each old address to its new one.
- Customer account mode
- Shopify's setting for how customers sign in. Current accounts use a one-time code sent by email instead of a password.
02Decide
Split the Squarespace site into three jobs and two cross-cutting areas
Before exporting anything, we sort what you have into three jobs (items 1 to 3). Items 4 and 5 are not separate exports: they cut across all three jobs and are planned alongside them.
- The shop: Squarespace exports physical and service products as a CSV, up to 10,000 products per file.
- The people and sales: customers and orders each export as their own CSV.
- The wider website: pages and a blog can export in a WordPress-format XML file, but store pages and product blocks do not.
- Features with no export route: reviews, customer notes and subscription details.
- The rest of the selling workflow: shipping rules, tax settings, discount codes, emails and payment methods.

04Test
Check how variants and images land
We import a small batch first and review it in Shopify before the full catalogue goes in.
- Shopify's customer import requires an Email column, though its value can be blank, and skips repeated emails or phone numbers, so we check the customer file against those rules and assess customers without an email separately.
- We open a product with several options, a product with many images and a service product.
- Shopify allows three options per product, so any Squarespace product that needs more is reshaped before import.
- Your team confirms prices, descriptions and stock on those samples.
05Launch
Keep the old shop live, then switch
Squarespace keeps selling until the Shopify store is approved.
- At launch the domain points to Shopify, and a redirect file (a list that sends each old address to its new page) is imported and tested.
- Shopify says passwords cannot be migrated through a CSV.
- Current Shopify accounts sign in with a one-time code sent by email rather than a password, so we agree the account mode with you and test first sign-in in it.
- After launch we monitor search performance and incoming orders.
- A platform change can lift or lower search results, and we make no promise either way.
- Our Ecommerce Migration Services page covers the wider route, and Shopify Development covers the new storefront.
Questions about Squarespace to Shopify
Does Squarespace's website export include my products?
No. Squarespace says store pages and product blocks do not export, so products come from the product CSV instead.
Will my product images arrive with the products?
Not reliably. Squarespace says featured images, alt text and variant images are not exported, so we re-add them.
Can customers keep their passwords?
No. Shopify cannot migrate passwords by CSV. Current Shopify accounts sign in with a one-time code sent by email rather than a password, so we set the account mode with you and test how an existing customer signs in.
Will my subscriptions carry over?
Not automatically. Subscription details are not in the standard customer export, so they need a plan of their own.

Make the move for a clear reason
Tell us what you sell, whether you use subscriptions or reviews, and which pages outside the shop must come with you. We will assess the exports first.
