Volusion to Shopify Migration

We move Volusion stores to Shopify, and for a big catalogue most of the work is decisions made before any file is uploaded. We check your source data, the Shopify structure you need and who is responsible for what at launch.

Shopify's Store Migration app does not list Volusion as a source, so this route runs on exports, imports and extra tools for some records.

02Decide

How do Volusion products map to Shopify?

Volusion generates child products from product options. Shopify allows up to three options per product and up to 2,048 variants per product. Fix the shape before importing: Shopify warns that changing option values later deletes existing variant IDs and creates new ones.

03Batches

Split the catalogue before you transfer it

Shopify's product CSV file cannot exceed 15 MB, so a big catalogue needs several files. Volusion also advises breaking very large imports into smaller batches, and its exports run one table at a time. Shopify states a size limit but no row limit, so we plan by size. Our order:

  1. Transfer a sample that includes your hardest products.
  2. Fix the mapping, then move the rest in batches by category.
  3. Keep a list of every change made in Volusion after the sample (price edits, new products, stock).
  4. Replay that list of changes (the delta) into Shopify before the switch.
  5. Compare counts and spot-check each batch.

04Transfer

Decide who owns stock, orders and customers

Stock needs one clear source of truth during the changeover. If a warehouse or stock system connects to Volusion today, we agree when it points at Shopify and how counts are frozen meanwhile.

  1. Shopify has no native CSV order import. Historical orders need a migration app, the Order and Transaction APIs or a Shopify Partner, and Volusion's API exports of customers and orders are limited to 100 records per run, so we plan many runs. Import products, then customers, then orders, and switch off staff notifications so each imported order does not email your team.
  2. Customers load from a UTF-8 CSV file of 15 MB or less with an Email column (its value can be blank). Shopify states passwords cannot be migrated, and current Shopify accounts need no password to sign in, so we agree the account mode and test first sign-in.

05Test

Test search, filters and the buying journey

Open one product of each type, then test collections, filtering and store search against the old behaviour.

  • Check variants, images, stock and a full test order with discount codes and shipping.

06Launch

Move addresses and hand over

Shopify can bulk import redirects (instructions sending visitors from an old address to a new one) from a CSV file.

  • They work only from addresses that would otherwise show a not-found page, and some paths such as /products, /collections and /cart cannot be redirected.
  • We build the map, test it and monitor search performance after launch, without promising an outcome.
  • Our Shopify Development and Ecommerce SEO services support this stage.

Questions about Volusion to Shopify

Will customers keep their passwords?

No. Shopify states passwords cannot be migrated through a customer file. Current Shopify accounts need no password to sign in, so we agree the account mode and test how customers sign in first.

Can order history be included?

Yes, but not by product CSV. We choose between a migration app, the Order API or a Shopify Partner, depending on what records you need.

Can the whole catalogue go in one file?

Not if the file would pass 15 MB. We split by product group and log each batch.

Will the migration improve sales?

It can improve the shopping journey, but a platform change does not promise more sales. We tie each change to a problem you want to solve.
