OpenCart to Shopify Migration

We move OpenCart stores to Shopify by turning your product options, category tree and installed extensions into a plan Shopify can run. OpenCart's official documentation lists no built-in export or import tool, so the first job is to confirm how your records can be extracted.

Our work covers the assessment, the transfer plan and the build in Shopify.

Choose what you want to change

Select one part of the OpenCart move, several parts or the whole project. The result is a discussion aid for your free 30-minute call, not a quote.

Where this startsOur OpenCart store has products with many options, a deep category tree and extensions we rely on, and we want to know what Shopify can take.

  • Extraction check and review of options and extensions
  • Variant mapping with agreed alternatives
  • Shopify storefront build
  • Customers, order history and redirects
  • Sample transfer, test orders and launch support

Check first: Which options and extensions have no obvious Shopify equivalent.

Next: Share your store address and the extensions you cannot trade without.

    • Inventory of option types used on your products
    • Choice options turned into Shopify options and variants
    • Alternatives for text, file and date options
    • Category hierarchy mapped to product groups and menus
    • Combination count checked against Shopify's variant limit

Check first: How we can extract the catalogue from your store.

    • List of installed extensions with the job each performs
    • Replacement app, custom build or removal agreed for each
    • Shopify theme and menu build
    • Test of product pages, basket and checkout

Check first: Which extensions change prices, shipping or payment.

    • Customer sign-in tested in the chosen Shopify account mode
    • Choice of how order history is moved or kept viewable

Next: Name the shipping, stock or accounting tools linked to your store.

    • Separate catalogue map for each store
    • Decision on which stores combine and which stay apart
    • Redirect map from old product and category addresses

In plain terms

Option
A choice a shopper makes on a product, such as size, colour or an uploaded file.
Variant
Shopify's name for one buyable version of a product.
Extension
An add-on package that gives an OpenCart store extra features.
Redirect
An instruction that sends visitors from an old address to the new one.
Collection
A group of products shown together on a Shopify store, such as a category.
Customer account mode
Shopify's setting for how customers sign in. Current accounts use a one-time code sent by email instead of a password.

02Decide

Settle every product option before building variants

OpenCart 4 documents nine option types, assigned product by product. On the Shopify side the ceiling is three options per product and 2,048 variants, so each product group goes through this order.

  1. List every option on the product with its type: select, radio, checkbox, text, file or date and time.
  2. Keep choice options that change what you sell or ship, such as size or colour, as Shopify options.
  3. For a fourth option group, decide whether to merge values, split the product or drop it.
  4. For text, file and date options, shoppers type or upload rather than choose, so agree an alternative such as an app or an extra product-page field.
  5. Give each price, weight or reward-point change a destination, or retire it.
  6. Multiply the values in each option group and compare the total with the 2,048 limit.

03Transfer

What moves as data and what needs a decision

Records are only as portable as the way we can extract them. OpenCart installs extensions as packages, and what third-party export extensions can do is not confirmed, so we test one against your data first.

  • Part of your OpenCart store

    Master and variant products

    How we treat it

One Shopify product with variants, sharing one handle (the end of the product address) in Shopify's import file

  • Part of your OpenCart store

    Category hierarchy

    How we treat it

Collections (groups of products) and menu levels, with the depth agreed with you

  • Part of your OpenCart store

    Installed extensions

    How we treat it

Listed by job, then replaced, rebuilt or retired

  • Part of your OpenCart store

    Customers

    How we treat it

Imported by file with an email for each person; passwords are not migrated

  • Part of your OpenCart store

    Order history

    How we treat it

Chosen after we confirm how much history you need

  • Part of your OpenCart store

    More than one store

    How we treat it

Each store's catalogue and address mapped on its own

04Test

Test the awkward product and every replaced extension

Choose a master product with several variants, a product with a file or text option, and the deepest category. Check each in Shopify as a shopper would: choosing a variant, seeing the right price and stock, and finding it through its collection.

Every replaced extension gets its own test. A payment or shipping change is checked with a test order.

05Launch

Plan the switch, addresses and customer access

We list your important product, category and information addresses and prepare redirects (instructions that forward visitors from the old address). Redirects cannot replace an address that still works in Shopify, so each is tested. Ecommerce SEO work can follow once the new store is stable.

Customer sign-in is agreed in the chosen Shopify account mode and tested. Orders and edits made after the sample transfer have a written plan, and we agree who watches the first orders. We monitor search performance after launch; no platform move can promise unchanged rankings.

Questions about moving OpenCart to Shopify

Does OpenCart have a built-in export for my products?

Not confirmed. OpenCart's official documentation lists none, and bulk export tends to rely on third-party extensions, so we check what your store can produce.

Will my product options become Shopify variants?

Some will, but not automatically. Choice options can fit Shopify's three-option limit, while text, file and date options need an alternative.

Can OpenCart extensions be moved across?

No. We list each extension's job and decide on a replacement, a custom build or removal.

Will order history arrive with the products?

Not automatically. Shopify names migration apps, its order and transaction tools or an outside Shopify Partner for historical orders.
